From French to Nordic languages

French cultural institutions provide three different grants aimed at helping foreign publishers publish French books in translation. The PAP, run by the Institut français in Paris, is a grant for acquisitions, the local PAP, run by the Instituts français abroad, is a more general grant for publication, and the CNL translation grant.

PUBLICATION GRANT SCHEME (PAP)

The Institut français’ PAP scheme supports foreign publishers wishing to publish books written in French and published by a French publishing house. It partially or fully covers transfer of copyright. 

Submission deadlines for the PAP:
→ January 20 for the March session
→ July 20 for the September session

LOCAL TRANSLATION GRANT PROGRAM (LOCAL PAP)

The Institut français du Danemark’s Local PAP program supports Danish publishers wishing to publish books written in French and published by a French publishing house. It consists of a lump sum grant of DKK 8,000 (€1,072) to cover all or part of the translation costs or other publication costs.

CNL TRANSLATION GRANT PROGRAM

The purpose of this grant is to bring a diverse range of books translated from French – across literary and scientific fields – to a wider audience. The aim is to support publishers who take financial risks to produce high-quality editorial works that are both diverse and widely accessible. Particular attention will be paid to high-quality works that will reach a wider readership, both in fiction and nonfiction.The selected works may be published in print and/or digital format. The application will be submitted by the book's French language publisher after the rights have been transferred to a foreign publisher.Amount of the grant: 40% or 60% of eligible translation costs; the grant amount is calculated based on eligible costs of between €834 and €38,000.

The Danish Arts Foundations provide grants for Literary production and translation.

THE DANISH ARTS FOUNDATION’S GRANT

Literary production and translation
Publishing and translation support for literary works (books, e-books, drama, literary podcasts etc.) for adults, children and young adults. This grant is intended for foreign publishers who publish Danish literary works in translation.
