PAP & Local PAP (programme d’Aide à la Publication)

‍Les Années by Annie Ernaux into Bulgarian and into Czech, La plus secrète mémoire des hommes by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr into Hungarian, Hindi, Japanese, and Polish, and many other fiction and non-fiction books as well as children’s books and comic books are translated each year with the support of the Institut français publication grant scheme (PAP).

The Institut français’ PAP scheme supports foreign publishers wishing to publish books written in French and published by a French publishing house. It partially or fully covers transfer of copyright.

Combined with more than 30 publication grant programs (Local PAP) run by the French cultural network abroad, the PAP scheme greatly contributes to the translation of books written in French. Applications are collected by the Institut français in each country, which shortlist them and submit them to the Institut français in Paris.

A selection committee meets twice a year to select around 300 submissions representing all types of literary form (except course books, technical books and practical texts, and books that have entered the public domain) on the basis of the following criteria: 
→ The publisher's readiness to take risks, particularly on contemporary authors;
→ The quality of the work and its place in French literary output;
→ The accuracy of the translation from the perspective of the local book industries;
→ The quality of the translation and the translator's reputation;
→ The amount of financial support sought (relative to typical price levels on the local publishing market);
→ The profiles of the publishing houses (work quality, frequency of submissions to the program, number of projects submitted).
