Born in Ambert in the French countryside, Jean-Claude Mourlevat grew up in a large family. He studied German and became a German teacher for 5 years, before turning into a professionnal stage actor. He started writing theatre pieces, then fiction and became a published author in 1998. Since then, Jean-Claude Mourlevat wrote several books for children and young adults, which received many prizes and a warm welcome by readers around the world. He sold over 700,000 copies in France with Gallimard Jeunesse and has been selected during ten years for the Astrid-Lindgren Prize, before winning it in 2021.
