Living with Men: Reflections on the Pelicot Trial
"I am a philosopher, and my work explores the relationships between women and men. After writing my first book on women’s submission to men, I went on to examine consent and gender injustices in heterosexual sexuality. I am also a woman approaching forty, who longs to exist in the world without constantly fearing the sexist and sexual violence that my friends, my daughters, or I myself might face.
I have witnessed the changes brought about by the #MeToo movement, and I see the masculine backlash that seeks to push women back into their role as the second sex. When I learned of the crimes committed against Gisèle Pelicot, I realized that her story encapsulates all the philosophical questions that define my work.
At first, I hesitated to attend the Mazan trial. But then, I faced the truth: I had to write about this trial and my experience of it, both as a philosopher and as a woman. And I had to confront the question that haunts me: Can we live with men?"
